Mount Doom!

For those who are Lord of The Rings fans today we went to the Tongariro National Park and walked a very short portion of the entire Alpine Crossing that takes you past some of the film sites for Mordor and Mount Doom.  Information on the film sites in NZ can be found here: http://www.jasons.co.nz/travel-guide-to-lord-of-the-rings-locations and we were in the Taupo Region.  Instead of having a gloomy doom like day we had a gorgeous day for hiking – more sun than clouds, no rain even though it was predicted and enough wind to keep us cool without buffeting us all over the mountain!

DOOM!

After our morning ‘walk’ to a small lake, about an hour round trip…

Where we saw a wood pigeon – so cool!

We headed up to the carpark and start the crossing with high hopes, high hopes mind you that I’d make it to the first stop about 4.5 km – yeah, not so much…

Past the two km mark it began to look like this…

Mount Doom won.

My consolation prize was lamb shanks so I didn’t fair too badly 🙂
